Dassault Systèmes and Kengo Kuma to tackle global air pollution at Milan Design Week

Dassault Systèmes’ ‘Design in the Age of Experience’ event at Milan Design Week will see some of the world’s most renowned design studios explore how design, technology and science can combine to create sustainable solutions to one of our world’s biggest challenges: air pollution.

At the heart of the event is Breath/ng, an air purifying installation which is able to absorb the equivalent of 90,000 cars worth of pollution. Combining decades of architectural experience with traditional origami crafts, the Tokyo-based architect utilized the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to model, test and explore the possibilities of creating networks as well as shapes from a unique, soft and supple material, The Breath.

Elusive Disturbances, a project from British design studio, Superflux and Wesley Goatley, will also set the scene at ‘Design in the Age of Experience’, by making the invisible problem of air pollution visible. Through new experiments with light sculpture and sound, visitors will be presented with an immersive installation that at once provides an in-depth reading of air quality data in Milan, while highlighting the ethereality and subjectivity of a data-based view of the world.

Also, appearing at the event will be The Smog Free Project, a series of urban innovations led by Dutch artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde and his team of designers and engineers to reduce pollution and to provide an inspirational experience of a clean future. It will consist of the Smog Free Tower, Smog Free Jewelry and Smog Free Bicycle concept, all of which demonstrate how the design studio share the dream of clean air whilst making people part of the solution instead of the problem.
